Elora Cataract Trail Gravity Sewer

Description of work

The planned construction along the Elora Cataract Trail will occur between Trafalgar Road and Main Street / Wellington Road 124, connecting the future Hillsburgh and Erin Village wastewater collection systems via gravity sewer. A new watermain connecting Hillsburgh to the water distribution system in Erin Village will also be installed.

Trees will be removed along the trail to allow for the installation of the linear infrastructure. Following construction of the gravity sewer and watermain, new trees will be planted and the trail pathway will be restored to its original or better condition.

Schedule of Work

Update or Potential Impacts

The Elora-Cataract Trail between Trafalgar Road in Hillsburgh and Main Street in Erin Village, highlighted as the red line on the map below, will be closed to the public starting September 5, 2023 for the construction of the Town of Erin trail sewer. Construction will start the week of September 11, 2023 with the removal of trees and vegetation by the Town’s Contractor, Nabolsy Contracting / Snow Brothers Contracting.

Tree and vegetation removal activities are expected to be completed within 8-12 weeks of the start date and will be immediately followed by installation of the sewer, which is anticipated to last for approximately 20 months. Following completion of the sewer installation, the Trail will be restored with new trees and vegetation.

Due to the open-cut construction method required for the installation of the gravity sewer along the Trail, the Town’s Contractor will have to remove trees and shrubs along the pipe alignment. Tree removals have been minimized to the greatest possible extent.

Once the gravity sewer installation is completed, the Trail pathway will be restored to a better condition and all trees that are removed will be replaced with approximately four times as many new trees. In all, approximately 20,000 trees will be planted back onto the trail and on other properties within the Town.

Road restrictions, increased truck traffic, dirt on roads, dust and noise may be experienced due to the construction activities. The Town, along with the Contactor, will make every effort to minimize these impacts to the community.

Efforts will be made to manage traffic around the work area for the safety of workers, road users and residents. Road users should expect delays and increased traffic at Trail access points at Main Street in Erin Village, Sideroad 17, Wellington Road 22 and Trafalgar Road in Hillsburgh.

Traffic on roads at the trail intersections may temporarily be reduced to one lane during the construction period for trail access by the Contractor. Access for emergency vehicles and pedestrians will be maintained at all times.

Work will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Work after hours or on weekends may be required during the course of construction.
